The Reverent Lutheran: an Excellent App!

We recently started following the Reverent Lutheran app and it's excellent.  Here's a link to the app: https://www.reverentlutheran.com/

The app offers a daily office, creeds, calendar, prayer library, the Lutheran rosary prayer, morning/noon/evening devotions, a Holy Scripture library, the Catechism and Book of Concord.

The app is free and I haven't found anything asking for a subscription or fees.  There doesn't seem to be any ads on the app, which is nice.

My favorite part of the app is the prayer library.  This is overall an excellent app.

Review of The Action Bible Anytime Devotions

We just finished The Action Bible Anytime Devotions.  Here's the link through Rainbow Resource.

In the description, it says this devotional is for grades 4-8.  I would say it's great for about ages 8-13.  Each devotional is two pages and touches on a certain topic.  These topics include things like kindness, courage, trust, hope, love, bullying, sharing the Gospel, loneliness, serving others, anger, compassion and faith.  Each devotional begins with a fictional story, followed by an explanation from a Biblical standpoint, a prayer and an exercise for further understanding.  The book includes 90 individual devotions.  We spend maybe ten minutes a day on the devotional.

This book was excellent.  We're also reading through The Action Bible and the two books definitely complement each other.  I think this has been one of our favorite books this year.

Links to Lutheran Homeschool Resources

I happened to be looking around online and found several links to Lutheran homeschool articles and websites that seem useful.

From Concordia Publishing House: https://blog.cph.org/teach/christas-homeschool-religion-curriculum-favorites-elementary-years  I think I need to buy My First Hymnal, described about halfway down the page.

Saint & Hymn Study

Continuing our study of the 12 Apostles...

James the Elder, son of Zebedee

  • We read the sections on James in three books
    • The Twelve Apostles (Marianna Mayer)
    • The Twelve Outlaws (T.S. Dobson)
    • Rose Book of Charts, Maps and Timelines
  • We also looked at Jesus' Genealogy and the sections on Herod's Palace in Rose Book of Bible Charts, Maps and Timelines

Lutheran Hymn: Salvation Unto Us Has Come

The Song of Francis (Tomie de Paola) - read-aloud for the 1st grader

This is really an incredible book.  Today was the first time we've officially used it for school, but I am so glad I bought it.  The chart of the 12 Apostles was useful. We also looked at the cross-sections of Herod's Palace and the fold-out chart of Jesus' genealogy.

Martin Luther's "Whether One May Flee from a Deadly Plague"

From a Lutheran historical perspective and in light of what's happening in the world with covid, this was fascinating to read!

It's an article from The Lutheran Witness.  Martin Luther is writing to a fellow pastor about people's different reactions to the plague.  It's eight pages and very academic, but worth reading.
