Homeschool Day 2/16

We did have school yesterday, but I didn't have time to update my blog.

Kindergartener

  • Math workbook - we worked on addition with cuisinaire rods
  • Explode the Code - he just started Book 1 - so far, very easy for him
  • Handwriting without Tears - we worked on the chalkboard and then the workbook
Five in a Row - The Giraffe Who Walked to Paris

Yesterday, we read the book and that was all we could do.  It's a long read for a 5 year-old!  He really enjoyed the book.  In fact, I think this might be his favorite so far next to The Story of Ferdinand.  We talked about Egypt, pyramids, what's inside pyramids...we watched a National Geographic video on giraffes.  We studied how they walk compared to how horses walk.  Finally, we studied sails (on ships).  We made aluminum foil "ships" and attached sails to them.  We blew air at the sails and they floated around in a baking dish full of water.

13 Year-old
  • Practiced piano
  • Algebra - review page - I'm glad she's doing these, because she needed a review of Order of Operations
  • Language Lessons for the Secondary Child
  • Free reading from her book crate
  • She read To Kill a Mockingbird and I read Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH
  • Mystery of History 4 - Charles Darwin
  • Anatomy & Physiology - more digestive system
15 Year-old
  • Algebra 2 - this lesson is actually the end of algebraic equations.  After this point in Mathusee, it's more graphing and word problems.  I need to start looking at Precalculus.
  • Language Lessons for the High School Student
  • Huckleberry Finn
  • Mapping the World with Art - drawing Alaska and the northeastern part of Asia
  • Biology reading and Yeast Lab - we added yeast and sugar to warm water and then looked at the yeast under the microscope at different time intervals with and without blue stain.  It was a good lab.
Me
  • I read Martin Luther by Martin Marty.
