Homeschool Day 11/20 - Our Last Day Before Christmas Break

 This is our last full day of school before we stop for Christmas break.  For the rest of the year, we are going to spend a few minutes per day on BJU Math 5 and finish our history reading (Greek Myths and the Odyssey).  In January, we will start back up with our new semester and a full 6th grade curriculum (with the exception of BJU Math 5 - we will take all semester to finish that).

Homeschool Day 11/12 + Nature Walk + Homeschooling with a Friend

 Today, another homeschooled fifth grader spent the day homeschooling with us and going on our nature hike.

• We wrapped up our Apologia Exploring Creation with Botany book today by going on another nature hike.
• We went on a mile-long trail, saw one of the few natural waterfalls in our county and the boys played on the natural rock formation that lines the lake
• They caught tadpoles (and put them back).

• We are finishing Apologia's Exploring Creation with Botany this week by going on two nature walks in a natural Texas forest and using the Trees of Texas Field Guide.
• Today we walked along a natural creek known for fossils and identified several trees that looked interesting.  
• We identified Ash trees, a Live Oak tree, Chinaberry, Holly and Sumac.

Homeschool Day 11/5 and Switching Math Curriculum

 Fifth Grader

I switched his main math curriculum today from Life of Fred to BJU Math.  He wasn't understanding division or long division and he needed more practice problems than Life of Fred was giving him.  He was also struggling with multi-digit multiplication and remember the algorithm.

I only bought the worktext, because I just don't need support for teaching math at a 5th grade level and we are already supplementing with Life of Fred.  I plan to continue working through the Life of Fred books once a week, because he really enjoys them.

I took him to Mardel (a local store here that carries homeschool curricula) and showed him Rod and Staff, Singapore Math, Abeka Math and BJU Math.  After looking at each one, he chose BJU Math 5.  We started on chapter 3 (multiplication) since the problems he's having are multiplication and division.

Here's what we finished today.  We finished school super-early, because we started earlier than usual.
