Homeschool Day 6/26

 Fifth Grader

We switched spelling programs from All About Spelling to Sequential Spelling, but not because All About Spelling wasn't working.  He was upset, because he felt like it was "spelling for babies" and he was embarrassed to be using it.  I already owned five levels of Sequential Spelling and grabbed it off the shelf to show him samples.  He said he wanted to try Sequential Spelling instead.  So, we switched.  If he doesn't like Sequential Spelling, we can easily switch back.

Crunch Labs Year 2: Bell Curve/Soccer Goalie

We have now started Year 2 of Crunch Labs.  This is the last year of subscription boxes, unless we subscribe to the Hack Pack, which is more for high school.  So we will need to wait on that, since my student is only ten years old.

Here's a link:

www.crunchlabs.com

We love Crunch Labs and I count it as Physics in my son's school records.  This lab was the Bell Curve/Soccer Goalie.

Here's a video of our project:

College Tour: Texas Christian University

 Here's the website: https://www.tcu.edu/

We toured this university today, because our son is a Senior this year at TCU and our daughter is planning to apply to TCU for her Master's later this year.  Our fourth is also considering TCU for their dance department as an undergrad.

TCU is very homeschool-friendly.  They accepted our homemade transcripts with no problem.  They also have a transfer agreement with our local community college and they accepted all of our son's transfer credits.

The campus is incredible.  It's enormous and took us four hours to walk the entire campus and see everything we wanted to see.  It's very clean and well-maintained.  They are very sports-focused with an incredible football stadium and basketball stadium.  They're a Division 1 school.  They have D1 sports, along with club sports.

My son has really liked this university.  The classes are rigorous, but there is a lot of support for students.  The school tries to include their families in different activities, which is refreshing, since we have not seen that at our daughters' universities.

They just opened a medical school and my son met their entrance requirements, so we discussed applying, but he chose to continue in the field of nursing.

Here are some pictures we took of campus today.

Back to the Grind 6/9

Vacation Bible School has ended.  The ballet recital is now over.  The 12th grader has graduated.  It's back to business with the 5th grader.

I'm having him take a recess to play outside after every two subjects.  This is causing our school to drag out a bit, but it's helping him focus better.

School today only took three hours, so it really isn't much.

A Great Post on Teaching Language Arts without Curriculum

"The Fox and the Grapes: A Mini Unit Study" - a blog post from www.diyhomeschooler.com

https://diyhomeschooler.com/the-fox-and-the-grapes-a-mini-unit/

I thought these were interesting step-by-step instructions on how to teach grammar, writing and spelling using literature (without a curriculum).
