African American History/Frederick Douglass Unit Study

 I'm listing here what we're planning for this study, so I don't lose track of our resources.  This is a unit study for an 11th grader (so it has some mature content).

Literature:

  • To Be a Slave by Julius Lester.  Original source narratives of slavery told by people who actually experienced it.
  • The Life of Frederick Douglass: A Graphic Narrative of a Slave's Journey from Bondage to Freedom by David F. Walker.  
History Background:
  • Continuing with Crash Course US History (specifically the videos leading up to the Civil War) - video series on Youtube
  • Roots miniseries (on streaming)
  • Amistad (movie)
Artist Study:
  • Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859-1937) - painter
  • Edmonia Lewis (1844-1907) - sculptor
Music:
  • Video: "History of Black Music" by Elise Pinsonneault
  • Song Study: "Go Down Moses"
  • Song Study: "Wade in the Water"
