Ancient Greeks and Romans Unit Study (1st Grader)

I'm just going to post my entire plan for the 1st grader's unit study on the ancient Greeks and Romans.  We already did Week 1 (I'm planning to do this for 4 weeks).

History Spines:

  1. Usborne Time Traveler (Ancient Rome chapter)
  2. Usborne Greek Myths
Literature
  1. King Midas: the Golden Touch (Demi)
  2. Pompeii, Buried Alive
  3. The Trojan Horse (Little)

Activities
  • Make a play dough map of Greece and Italy
  • Write a monster myth
  • Research Greek weapons and shields, make a Greek shield from cardboard and paint it

  • Greek Olympics - research the events and try some of the events outside
  • Make a playdough facade of the Parthenon

  • A study of the constellations would probably be good, too.

QSL Physics Lab Kit - we finished and a review

https://www.qualitysciencelabs.com/qsl-physics/

This is the link for the QSL Physics lab kit.  It's designed for high school homeschool physics, so you could add the kit to a physics text and have a lab component that's possible to be done at home.  It has labs that cover movement, friction, momentum, pendulums, force, electronics, magnetism, motors, light, etc.

I had a love/hate relationship with this lab kit.

The drawbacks I felt right away:

  1. It's very expensive.  I usually can not afford one kit for $300.  A dear homeschooling friend loaned the kit to us and that was the only way I was able to use it for our physics course.
  2. The early labs were difficult to figure out (for us).  It didn't seem like the book explained the labs very well.  More pictures, especially in the electronics section, would've been helpful.
  3. We had a hard time with the electronics labs.  I had to get help from a family member who used to be an electrician.  He was able to do the labs with us and show us how to use the multimeter, etc.
  4. Some of the motion labs were more fun to do with toys.  We used matchbox cars and ramps for a couple of the labs.
I absolutely did not like the kit in the beginning and almost packed it up and put it away.  But, I tried a couple more labs and over the course of the semester, I fell in love with this lab kit.  I actually offered to buy the kit from my friend, because I know I would use it again with my youngest when he's in high school.

The things I loved about the kit:
  1. I took physics in high school and college and we never, ever got to actually USE electronic breadboards and components to try out different circuits.  The teens and I learned a ton about circuitry through this lab kit.  The breadboard is excellent and they give you extra components in case you drop a resistor or jumper wire.  All of the electronic labs WORKED.  I was very impressed.  I had to have the laptop open when we did the electronics labs, because we were trying to learn more about the components.
  2. Lenses, Mirrors, Reflection/Refraction, Laser Beam Labs.  Another thing that seemed to be overlooked when I took physics in school.  There was never time to play with a prism and a laser beam.  The girls and I enjoyed the lens labs.
  3. The Speed of Sound in Air lab.  Without giving away too much, this was also an excellent lab that I've never seen done in school.
  4. The math focus.  Every lab does have math to it.  Graphing, making charts, equations....  It IS physics, so there's math.  But it wasn't overwhelming.  Graphing, averages, etc are good skills to practice in the lab.
This kit is going to really be missed when I have to return it to my friend.  I'm pretty good at coming up with science labs and activities, but I don't think I would've been able to put together physics labs like this kit did.  It definitely added a lot to our physics course.

Our 3rd Has Now Applied to College

Oldest two are still in college.  Both are straight A students and on the Dean's List.  The third will most likely be joining them in the fall (that will be my oldest daughter's last semester at that college, since she will be transferring in January 2023.  Oldest has also decided that she would like to continue with her Master's in Fine Arts, so she's going to be in school for quite a while yet.)

My third plans to double major (like her sister) in Studio Art and Theater.  She also wants to take music classes at the college.

We are going to work on essay-writing practice tests all next week to get her ready for the TSI.

2022 -New Year, End of Year Tasks, etc

Records

I keep records by the calendar year.  This weekend, I updated and finalized everyone's end of year records for 2021.

On these EOY records, I include what we did for the year in these topics:

  • Math
  • Language Arts
  • Literature
  • Bible
  • History/Geography
  • Science
  • Art & Music
  • Extras
  • Physical Education
  • Field Trips
  • Extracurricular Activities
Organizing

In our school room is a rolling book cart.  I cleaned everything off the cart that we are finished with and put it back on the book shelves.

I filled in the month of January on our dry erase board calendar.

Planning: High Schoolers

Because we school year round, nothing is going to end in May.  I'm guessing we'll be finished with everything. except Stewardship at the end of March.

My plan is to have them continue with:
  1. Literature - I have a list of modern novellas that look interesting
  2. Algebra 1 - she is almost finished with this.  I might have her finish and then either immediately start Geometry or take a break and work on some fun math or something
  3. Stewardship/Personal Finance - I think she is only about halfway through this
  4. Windows to the World
  5. American Government - continue with Bill of Rights and Infographic Guide.  I'm going to do a mock trial with them and I want to take a field trip, but with Covid, I don't know how possible that will be.
  6. Chemistry - I have two more science kits + finish periodic table
  7. Physics - We still need to build our engine, launch our Estes rockets, finish the last 3 labs in the QSL Physics kit and do the ultra glider kit
  8. Coding
Another thing I need to do this semester is have the 11th grader apply to college and take the TSIs.  As soon as she passes those, she's going to graduate at the end of the semester.  She's very much ready for college.

Planning: 1st Grader

We followed The Well-Trained Mind this semester.  This is the first semester we've done that, because I usually put together unit studies.  I'm going back to unit studies this semester.  I've noticed a couple of things:

  • He is not progressing in reading this semester.  I need to put half of what we're doing away and really, really focus on reading.
  • Our set-up had way too many moving parts and I prefer the continuity of unit studies.
  • Life of Fred is being dropped, because he has absolutely no idea how to answer the questions.  It's too conceptual for him.
My first unit study for him will be the Human Body, because we were already studying that and I had more plans for it.

After that, I plan to do a study on the Ancient Greeks.

Lutheran Bible Translators Living Water: New Testament through Music

https://lbt.org/livingwater-2/

Starting January 7 (it looks like from their website), Lutheran Bible Translators is offering the entire New Testament (ESV) set to music.  They are planning to release a chapter a day.
